Welcome to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua!

or: I’m in San Juan, bitch!

Welcome to our blog – we hope you’re ready because you’re in for a treat!

As one of the first hostels in San Juan del Sur, we feel it is our duty to take you on a tour through our little hometown. So buckle up while we’re getting ready to sweep you off your feet and whisk you away on a magic carpet ride through town!

Let us introduce you to the charming, the quaint, the pacifico-salvaje town of San Juan del Sur.

In the very South of Nicaragua, more specifically in the department of Rivas, San Juan del Sur lies nestled into a bay. Surrounded by lush jungle-scenery (at least during rainy season), the U-shaped coastline is a sight to see.

The little fishing town is a popular hotspot for international and national tourists alike. From families to backpackers – San Juan del Sur has something for everyone.

See San Juan del Sur and die (or whatever Goethe said)

While homie Goethe was talking about Naples in the official quote, we think it couldn’t be more fitting to San Juan del Sur – or SJDS, how the cool kids call it. The vibe, the beauty of the nature and the feeling that every little thing… is gonna be alright.

Enough with the cheesy quotes and here’s some real talk.

The thing about San Juan del Sur is: After you’ve been there, you’re gonna wanna keep coming back for more. Trust us: We’ve seen it all before. Volunteers who were planning to stay only for a few days, just to end up making SJDS their home base for a year. Backpackers who opened up their own restaurant in town. Party girls who found themselves getting married to a local – when we say we’ve seen it all, we truly mean it.

Safe to say, San Juan del Sur has a friendly feel to it. The locals are sociable and always ready to help when needed. No matter the question, chances are, that someone knows someone (most probably a primo) who can help you with whatever it is, you require help with.

The town is easily walkable, there are shuttles that bring you to the surf beaches and motorbikes are easy to rent. There are plenty of activities for all kinds of tastes: yoga, surfing, horseback riding, scenic walks, fishing, partying, sun-lounging… you name it.

San Juan del Sur – from North to South

First things first, and let’s start our tour at the North end of town. Let us introduce you to San Juan’s unmistakable landmark, the Jesus Statue. Holding out his hand in protection, Cristo de la Misericordia (Christ of Mercy) is enthroned on a hill above town, looking down over the bay with a benevolent smile.

Pachamama tip: Visit the Jesus statue around sunset time! Breathtaking views await in this picture-perfect spot. Bring 100 Cordobas (∼3$) for entrance. You can easily walk up or grab a cab if you’re not into hiking uphill.

Making your way towards the South from the river, you’ll notice numerous oceanfront structures. With their thatched roofs and the blaring bachata or reggaeton, these rancho bars are the perfect spot to dive into the local bar culture. Share a litro of Toña, put some coins in the jukebox and watch the sunset.

Some other great spots as you advance further South:

  • Arribas Bar for late night dancing
  • La Reina del Sur for cheap eats right next to Hostel Pachamama
  • The steps in front of La Reina for sunset watching
  • The malecon for skateboarding or people-watching

On the way, you’ll find countless restaurants and bars – read more about that in our San Juan del Sur restaurant guide (coming soon).

The Port of San Juan del Sur is located at the southern end of the city – a hub for numerous fishing boats as well as more touristic options such as yachts and catamarans. The port area offers several restaurants and a children’s playground. There are also various small shops selling fresh fish, shrimp, and lobster – the acopios

Right next to the acopios is the entrance to the Lighthouse Hike. It’s fairly steep in some parts, but only takes a maximum of 30 minutes to get to the top – and the views are absolutely worth it. Bring some cash to buy a beer at the restaurant!
